LA VERNE, Calif. — October 26, 2017 — Rowland Unified School District announced today that it has partnered with the University of La Verne to ensure that students have access to a high-quality, affordable college education after graduation. The Partnership for Access to College Education (PACE) promises qualified students from Rowland Unified a pathway to college that includes:
- Guaranteed admission to the University of La Verne
- Guaranteed financial aid of at least $10,000 per year
- Application fee waivers
- And a range of programs to assist with college readiness and the application process
“We are extremely excited and proud to enter into this bold partnership with the University of La Verne,” said Dr. Julie Mitchell, superintendent of the Rowland Unified School District, one of the largest school districts in the San Gabriel Valley. “We are committed that our students have access and opportunity to go to college and this partnership will help our students make their college dreams a reality.”
To qualify, students must meet certain criteria. This includes that they graduate from high school college ready, do not need remedial courses, and have been continuously enrolled in the district for at least four years. They must also have a minimum SAT score of 980, and an ACT composite of at least 19. The agreement begins fall 2017 and includes this year’s graduates who meet the program’s academic requirements.
About 75 percent of first-time freshman come from within 50 miles of La Verne. About half of the students who attend the University of La Verne are first-generation college students.
“We are excited to see the Partnership for Access to College Education continue to grow, expanding opportunities for more and more students throughout the region,” University of La Verne President Devorah Lieberman said. “We look forward to providing support to these students and guiding them on their paths to success.”
Ensuring students access to college is more important than ever. A recent study from the Economic Policy Institute revealed that the pay gap between college graduates and everyone else is the largest on record, with college graduates now earning an average of 56 percent more than non-graduates.
More than two dozen public school districts, private high schools, and community organizations have joined the University of La Verne’s PACE program.
In addition to serving first-time college freshman, the PACE partnership also benefit employees of the school district. Faculty and staff admitted to the University of La Verne’s Ed.D. program are guaranteed a $100 per unit scholarship.
